Mieczyslaw (Mick) Grabowski, 96, a resident of The Dalles passed away peacefully at the Mid-Columbia Medical Center on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, with his family at his side.
He was born September 18, 1923 in Sokoly, Poland. He was one of five children to Lucjan and Czeslawa. Early on in his life he grew up on the family farm. Cultivating a love and compassion for animals and especially birds. He attended the village parish with his family and the local school. During this time he acquired a deep reverence and faith in the Lord Jesus. Things changed suddenly when Russian forces invaded Poland and young Mieczyslaw was told by his mother to literally hide in the field in a fox den. Next the German forces invaded Poland and pushed out the Russians. One day after a parish service the German forces conscripted all boys into forced labor camps. Sixteen-year-old Mieczyslaw was taken away from his family. Initially he was taken to dig foxholes at the front lines under fire and physical deprivation. Surviving the front lines and physical sickness he was forced into farm labor to provide food for German forces. At the end of the World War II German forces took him again to the frontlines to dig foxholes and build fortifications under severe fire from Allied forces. Later the Allied forces lead by the British army liberated Mieczyslaw. He immediately helped the Allied liberators and their efforts to build and secure the Allied liberation of Germany. Mieczyslaw joined the Polish Armed Forces in the West (PAFW) to support the Polish Government in exile. In 1947 the PAFW was disbanded and Mieczyslaw, now referred to as Mick, elected to not return to communist Poland.
He married Hildegard on December 28, 1948 in Germany and they immigrated to Australia in 1950. In 1951 their daughter Ingrid was born. While in Australia he built his career at the Bunnerong Power Station. Mick traversed through the difficulties of being a non-English speaking immigrant to Australia and throughout his life he worked diligently to support his family and better their lives. His daughter Ingrid married Bill Fisher in 1969 and moved to The Dalles, Oregon. In 1977, Mick and Hilda relocated to The Dalles, OR to be near Ingrid’s family. Throughout Mick’s life his decisions were based around prioritizing family above all else. Mick worked for the North Wasco County School District and retired in 1985.
Mick was a member of the Mid-Columbia Senior Center and attended Gateway Presbyterian Church where he enjoyed the Thursday morning Men’s Group and their fellowship. After retirement, Mick continued to commit himself to his family and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His family affectionately called him “Poppy” and “Opa”. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
In his later days, Mick received loving care from Cherry Heights Retirement Community and Flagstone Senior Living.
He is survived by his daughter - Ingrid Fisher, her husband - Bill Fisher; of The Dalles. Additionally his grandchildren - Alisa Miller of Sioux Falls, SD; Sarah Fisher of Long Beach, CA; John Fisher - of Spokane, WA; great grandson Caleb and Joshua Miller of Sioux Falls, SD; and great granddaughters Zoe and Ellis Fisher of Spokane, WA. Our cherished and beloved Vicky Jean Lloyd (Wassenmiller) went home to be with the Lord on July 21, 2020, at her home in The Dalles, OR.
Her journey began on October 25, 1954. Vicky was born in The Dalles, OR, to Fredrick Jacob Wassenmiller and Shirley Ann Wassenmiller (Reger) at the historic Hamilton Hospital (now Mid-Columbia Medical Arts Bldg). She was the first born of three children and the protective sister to brothers Rick Wassenmiller (The Dalles, OR) and Fred Wassenmiller (Vancouver, WA).
She attended the historic Thompson Addition School and Colonel Wright Elementary School in The Dalles, OR. At age 13, Vicky and her brothers relocated to Osgood, MO, with their mother. Here, she made three lifelong friendships that were like sisters to her. The four of them were known as "The Osgood Girls". She will always be an Osgood Girl. She graduated from Grundy County R-V High School in 1972 and moved to Kansas City, MO.
At age 21, she met her husband in Kansas City at a wire manufacturing plant where they both worked. He noticed her forklift driving and cute bib overalls. She noticed his fast car, charm, and witty sense of humor. In 1983, at age 28, they were married in Kansas City and soon had three children. In 1989, they moved to The Dalles where she considered her true home to be. She cherished all of the natural beauty that surrounds the Columbia River Gorge. She especially loved the notable beauty that comes alive during the fall season.
Vicky was a devoted wife, mother to her three girls, and grandmother to her three grandchildren. Her love for all of them was endless. She felt truly blessed to have been given these most precious gifts that life has to offer. She was a dear friend to many and valued all of her close friendships.
She will always hold an unwavering space in the hearts of her husband, Darrell Lloyd, her daughters, Lisa Dexter (Lloyd), Laura Tedford (Lloyd), and Lacey Lloyd. She will always watch over her grandchildren, Alivia Dexter (4), Ethan Dexter (1), and Jacob Tedford (5 months). Her role of Grammy was her most honored and highly regarded. It was the role she had waited a lifetime for. You could often hear her saying "I love those babies!".
She taught us all how to love with all of our heart, give with all of our heart, and trust in God with all of our heart. Additionally, she taught us what to do with our dash. Her dash from 1954 to 2020 is full of so much life, love, and faith. Among so many things, her beauty, smile, undying love, spiritual leadership, compass to home, and zest for all of life's adventures will be so incredibly missed. Most of all, we will miss her dash that signifies the time when we shared this life together. She is a true gem the world has lost and Heaven has gained. She remained a constant bright gem in all of our lives, even in times of reaching for her highest levels of strength. She is truly the strongest person we will ever know. We will see you in our dreams until we meet again, Momma. xoxoxo
