Zada Rae Davis, age 83, resident of Rufus, Oregon, passed away November 4, 2019. There

will be family directed services at a later date.

     Charles Hadley Swisher, a resident of Dufur, Oregon, passed away October 24, 2019 at the age of 96.  He was the oldest of two sons to Haymon Swisher and Hazel (Keller) Swisher.  One of his grandfathers was a founder of the mining town Cornucopia, Oregon in 1886 following the discovery of gold in the area.  His first Job was working in the famous Queen of the West mine.

     As a senior in high school in Baker City he competed a s along distance runner.  After high school he moved to Cornucopia and stayed with his father there until 1941 when he moved to Portland to take a course a Benson Tech High School.  Boeing hired him out of the class there for sixty-two and a half cents an hour.  Charlie soon discovered her could make one dollar- forty-five cents an hour working at the shipyards in Portland. 

     After the Pearl Harbor attack, Charlie signed up for the Naval Air Corps.   He was stationed at Oak Harbor, Washington working on Catalina Sea Planes with self-sealing gas tanks.  

     On October 3, 1944 Charlie married Pearl G Schuls in Mt. Vernon, Washington.

     Charlie joined the Corps of Engineers in 1952 first working as a security guard.   In 1963 one of his bosses discovered how smart he was and offered a promotion to be the supervisor of the navigation locks at the John Day Dam.  In the early 1970’s he was named the head of park and recreation facilities at The Dalles Dam until he retired and moved to Dufur in 1990.     

     Charlie was strong in his Catholic faith and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  He was also a member of the Elks and the Eagles.

     He is survived by his son, Gary Swisher (Becky); daughter, Sharon Swisher; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

          A Celebration of Life will be held 1:00 Saturday December 7, 2019 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 420 NE 1st Street, Dufur, Oregon, 97021, with Rev. Father Fabian Nwokorie and Rev. Father Magg officiating.

     Christian Burial Committal will be at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, 1222 W. 10th Street, The Dalles, Oregon with Rev. Father Joseph Levine officiating.   

Carl Mark Blount, age 78, resident of The Dalles, Oregon passed away November 2, 2019 in The Dalles, Oregon. There are no services planned at this time.

Douglas A McAllister, age 76, passed away Wednesday October 16, 2019 at The Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, Oregon. Arrangements are pending.

Kelly Sue Dillard, age 50, resident of Dufur, Oregon, passed away October 19, 2019. There are no services planned at this time.

Richard (Rick) James Darnielle was born August 6, 1961, to Jim and Leah Darnielle. He was a lifelong resident of The Dalles, Ore. He passed away on October 21, 2019, after battling illness for many years.

Rick was raised in the 8 Mile Creek area, all during his childhood, where he loved being on the ranch with his father and grandfather. He learned all that he could about farming and ranching, which was his passion in life.

In 1981, he married his sweetheart, Sharon Nodurft, and in 1984 they had their first child, Cody James. Soon to follow in 1991, their second child was born, Shayn Anthony. Rick was always proud to show his sons the wholesome way of life as a farmer, rancher, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed the time that was spent with close friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jim Darnielle; grandparents, Harry and Dorothy Darnielle.

He is survived by Sharon Darnielle of The Dalles; sons, Cody (Kimberly) Darnielle of The Dalles, Shayn (Hayley) Darnielle of North Dakota; grandsons, Jaxen and Noah Darnielle (Cody and Kimberly).

A remembrance of life will be held on November 1, 2019, at 1 p.m. at the Sorosis Park Shelter., 300 E Scenic Dr., The Dalles, Oregon.

Clarence Eugene Farrar, (61), loving husband, brother, and friend died peacefully at MCMC on October 15, 2019.  He will have a private ceremony among family members in the near future.

Clarence was born in Portland on August 7, 1958.  He loved to fish, play pool, darts and Texas Hold ‘em.  He loved hanging with his friends at the Moose and his beloved wife Conney Isaac Farrar.

Clarence graduated from Wishram high school, attended WSU, worked at Boeing in Seattle and Burlington-Northern Railroad.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Smith and Ardus Wakefield.

His siblings include Karla Smith-Watson (The Dalles), Joseph Smith (Portland), Catherine (Kitton) Smith (Whidbey Island) and Mike Smith (Portland).

His children include Angie Hornshaw and Cherish Yandell (Whidbey Island), Casey (Cassandra) Smith (Seattle), and Calrence (Leo) Farrar IV (The Dalles).

Margaret Matilda Larsen, 92, of The Dalles, Ore., died Friday, October 11, 2019, surrounded by her family at her home. Margaret was born to Joseph and Esther Leonore Boisvert March 5, 1927, in South Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years David Harry Larsen, and her brother William Bosivert, and is survived by her brother John Trueman, Quesnel B.C., Canada, and sister Cathrine Fosbery, Merritt, B.C., Canada, and four children: Harry Larsen, wife Mary Jo, The Dalles, Ore.; Sandra Horwitz, husband Ted, The Dalles, Ore.; Annette Fernald, husband Dennis, Battle Ground, Wash.; and Steven Larsen, wife Nancy, Troutdale, Ore., and eleven grandchildren: Richard, Stephanie, Larry, Tina, Jason, Justin, Autumn, Logan, Chandler, Branson and Kobi, and four great-grandchildren: Cassidy, Finley, Emerson and Oliver. A service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Ore., on Monday, November 4, 2019, at 10 am, with a gathering for family and friends afterward at 2414A SE 17th Ave., Battle Ground, WA 98604.

Kolotea Tufaina I'aulualo, age 77, resident of The Dalles, passed away October 6, 2019. She was surrounded by family at her home. A Going Home Celebration is planned for 11:00 AM Friday, October 18th, 2019 at First United Methodist Church, 305 E. 11th St., The Dalles. Burial will follow at IOOF Cemetery, 1100 18th St., The Dalles.

Thomas (Tom) Elliott, nearly lifelong resident of The Dalles, Ore., passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family.

Tom was known for his love of fishing, camping, hunting and white-water rafting but mostly his love of family and friends.

Tom graduated from The Dalles High School in 1968. He then went on to Oregon Technical Institute where he studied heavy equipment diesel mechanics, graduating in 1970. He served in the Navy as a Seabee in Vietnam.

Upon returning to The Dalles, Tom married Patti (Shaver) Elliott in 1972, where they raised their family together.  He enjoyed his ever changing career in heavy equipment mechanics and was happy to learn new things - starting with farm machinery, moving to logging equipment, then fire engines, and finishing his career with Bonneville Power Administration in 2014. Tom was also an active member of The Dalles Rod and Gun Club since 1982, making many fond memories with family and friends at the club cabins on the Deschutes River.

Tom is survived by the love of his life, Patti;  children, Chad, Erin, and Jill; grandchildren Dane, Samuel, and Shaver; mother Angie; sisters, Jennifer and Judi; brother Brian; and oldest and dearest friend Nerl (Mike Bartell).

Tom will be remembered for his love and whole-hearted caring for family and friends. All were blessed to have had him in their lives. A private celebration of Tom will be at a later date with family.

G. Louise Kendrick was born on August 6, 1930 in Tulsa, Okla., to Andy and Mary Wilder.  In her early years, Louise spent lots of time with her neighboring grandma who took her to church regularly and shared God's love with her.   From a very young age, Louise became passionate about sharing her love for Jesus with others around her, especially children.

Louise graduated high school in 1948 and then began nurses training, which is how she met her future husband as her patient. She and Delmar Kendrick were married on May 15, 1950, and had four children, Delese, Kit, Sue, and Mark.  Louise and Del set an example to generations about what a dedicated, loving commitment through matrimony looks like during their more than 68 years of marriage, parting only through death last February.

Not only a dedicated wife, Louise lived out a strong commitment to each of her children and grandchildren as well as to extended family, which was extremely important to her.  While fully capable of firmly teaching respect for others, good manners, hard work, etc., one of her hallmarks was Louise’s playfulness and even orneriness.  Well into her 70's she would not shy away from challenging the grandkids to a round of "horse", demonstrating her continuing prowess and skill as a star basketball player from her high school days.  In addition, playing cards and other games was a regular event in the Kendrick household motivated by Louise.

Teaching Sunday School was one way she used her gifts for literally decades, beginning at 12 years old and not stopping until a health event made it necessary at age 83!  Over the years, many children, teens and adults have known her simply as "Teacher Louise".  Coming from modest means and living through the Great Depression gave Louise a unique foundation she was able to use.  She saw everyone as precious and was never intimidated by sickness, poverty, or even dirty, sticky hands and faces, but instead of being put off, engulfed each one lovingly in her embrace. She would gladly share with every individual God's love for them and how they had value to Him and in her eyes as well.  Her ministry with youth was also evident in Lyle for many years during "Friday Nights" , and in the 70's and 80's, with women as a speaker for Christian Women's Club.  Her activities and examples for young and old alike were often playful, animated, and captivating in nature.  She had a great ability to laugh at herself and be silly, engaging the listener as she drove home a concept from God's Word.

The Kendrick's made their home in Lyle, Wash., and had a significant impact on the community. Louise joined in with the family grocery business and used her nursing skills many times to assist others in need.  She even delivered a baby once when rockslides prevented transport to the hospital.  One of her biggest community contributions was being "grandma" to the Lyle High School students their home bordered.   Always with an "open door policy", teens would come in for short visits, a stay during a time of need, or for a hot meal at lunchtime.  Walls in their kitchen were full of names and measurements of many children over the years, along with graduation photos and information.  Her warm hospitality was like a magnet drawing people in through her genuine caring.

Louise truly loved people and had an outgoing personality.  Louise made meaningful connections with everyone she met, and consistently shared her faith during her encounters.  She had a positive influence on others and will be greatly missed.

Due to a series of health events, Louise died on October 4, 2019, surrounded by loving family.  She was preceded in death by her parents; youngest sister Shirley; and her loving husband.  She is survived by her sister Mary Ann; her children; grandchildren, Jacob, Nathan, David, Jeff, Kable, Katie, Kyle, Courtney, Sarah, Christie, and Ben; and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Gateway Church 1111 Dry Hollow Rd, The Dalles, Oregon 97058 on Saturday, October 26, 2019, at 3:30 p.m.

Esther Meisenhoelder Nygaard passed away on September 29, 2019 in The Dalles, Ore. She was born in Tripp, S.D. where her parents eked out a living on a hardscrabble farm. Eventually losing the farm, her family moved to Medford, Ore. During WWII the family invited soldiers they met at church to their home for Sunday dinner. One day handsome Vernon Nygaard showed up at their table, and before he was shipped out to fight in the South Pacific, he and Esther were married. After the war, they moved several times until 1957, when they moved to Salem, Ore., where Esther lived for the next 54 years. In Salem Esther raised their two sons, was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, and worked as a secretary at Englewood Elementary School. A classic homemaker, she loved cooking, sewing and providing for her family. Her hobbies included painting, playing the piano, reading, and, later in life, loving her grandchildren. After Vernon died in 2000, Esther continued to live in the family home in Salem, but finally made the difficult decision to relocate to The Dalles to be near family. In The Dalles, she found a new church community at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Esther is survived by her sons Mike (Sandy), Mark (Julie), and her four grandchildren, Tyler, Tim, Patrik, and Carina. The family will hold a private remembrance at a later time.Esther Meisenhoelder Nygaard, age 92, resident of The Dalles, passed away September 29, 2019 at her home. Christopher Robin Herrick, age 72, resident of The Dalles, passed away at home September 28, 2019. Private burial services will be held at Willamette National Cemetery.

     AKA: Fred, Rocky & Pops!  He went to be with Our Lord and the Love of His Life, Hilda on September 24th, 2019.  He was the 2nd of seven children born to Abel & Carmelita Duran in Monte Vista, Colorado on April 11th, 1930.  He now leaves one sibling behind, Teresa.

     He enlisted in the Army in 1948 and was a part of the 32nd Field Artillery Battalion in Germany.  After an Honorable Discharge in 1952 he went on to become a Nurse, Detective (PI), Policeman, Fireman (30 years) and for the last 35 years, a Spanish speaking interpreter for the Municipal Court for the City of The Dalles. 

     It wasn't unusual to see him walking the streets and roads of TD as he did 20 miles a day for many years.  He also loved to hunt and Halibut fishing in Alaska was his favorite thing!  He was a devout Catholic and hardly ever missed a Sunday for church and afterward would take communion to those that couldn't attend.  Thanksgiving he would pull out his own potato peelers and go to the community dinner and peel potatoes for days, something he looked forward to each year.  Best of all, he loved dancing two or three days a week with his love, Hilda!

     Rocky is survived by his stepdaughters Rena (Greg) Hunley and Debbie Copple; three grandchildren, Geoff (Jess) Hunley, Andy Hunley and Mikayla Copple; two great-grandsons, Alex and Grayson Hunley; and many relatives in Colorado.

     On behalf of Pops, we would like to give a special Thanks to Kim Koch, Shirley Ringlebauer, and Doreen & Bob Brown for being so supportive, caring and loving to him all throughout these past few months and for many years. You are special friends.

Patricia Thomsen passed away peacefully on  September 14, 2019 at her residence in Portland, Oregon. Born on March 7, 1933 in Portland, she was one of twelve children of Annetta and Charles LaMarche. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1951.

Pat loved working at the Granada Theater in her younger years, where she eventually met her husband Art of 51 years. They shared two children: Dan and Deana. They enjoyed traveling and spending time together at their place in Lincoln City. In her free time Pat could be found playing bridge, volunteering at St. Peter's Landmark, or going out for dessert.    

She was funny, kind, and joyful, and well loved. Pat moved to Portland in early 2018 to be closer to her grandchildren and they loved seeing her often. She was born with the gift of gab and could make a friend out of anyone.

A memorial service will be held in The Dalles at Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral home on Wednesday, September 18 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Mary’s Academy, The Dalles, OR.
