Merle was born on October 19, 1948, in Stark, Kansas, to Merle Edwin Phillips Sr. and Ester Phillips, both of whom preceded him in death. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Oregon, where he would spend the majority of his life. He was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his craft.

A man who deeply loved the outdoors, Merle found joy in fishing and hunting. He cherished the friendships he built with those who shared his passion, and he took great pride in the close circle of friends he maintained throughout his life. He also gave back to his community by volunteering for several years with the Gleaners Food Bank in The Dalles.

Merle was married three times, most recently to his beloved wife, Caroline Phillips. Together, they shared 33 years of life in The Dalles and raised their daughter, Morgan Phillips. He is also survived by his children from a previous marriage: Mike, Michelle, and Marci.

In addition to his wife and children, Merle is survived by his siblings: Roger Phillips, Bruce Phillips, Linda Phillips, Elton Graves, Ellen.

Merle will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, love of family, and deep appreciation for the outdoors. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, service, and lasting friendships.
